FTL is Impossible
A sad, but, in my opinion, an unrealistic solution to the Fermi Paradox
SOLUTIONS TO THE FERMI PARADOX
I want to say a few things: to begin, I am incredibly biased as I believe FTL is not only possible, but just a matter of time before we develop it. Second, I am not a scientist, so take this from someone who does not know a ton about physics (however I watch a metric shit ton of videos and read on the matters).
What is FTL, what are the challenges, and is it even possible?
FTL is faster-than-light travel. It is often regarded as the "cosmic speed limit" because nothing can go faster than light, less you want to allow breaking causality.
Simply stated: faster than light travel is going faster than the speed of light. The speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second. It sounds incredibly fast, but you have to consider the distances. Think of it like this: imagine your neighborhood is the solar system. You get in a car, you tell them to drive as fast as they can to the nearest town or other neighborhood. If they went at fast as they possibly could (the speed of light), it would take over four years to get there. The sheer magnitude of the Universe is unfathomable.
The challenges to FTL sound insurmountable. One, it would absolutely destroy your body on the smallest of levels, two, it breaks causality (leads to time paradoxes), and three, requires an infinite amount of energy. That sounds horrifyingly difficult. All of these lead to the idea that it is simply impossible to go past the speed of light.
